Rolls-Royce_Silver_Ghost_at_Centenary (1)was known as the world’s best car by Autocar back in 1907, the year of its first release. Originally named and manufactured by the Rolls-Royce Ltd as “40/50 horsepower” Only one car and model was originally named the “Silver Ghost” at that time, the car with Chassis number 60551 and it is registered AX201. This was the 12th model built at that time and was specifically used as the demonstrator of the company. It was named the 4050 Silver Ghost because of its quietness that is almost ghost-like. It was painted with aluminium paint along with fittings which were silver plated. Soon all 40/50 horsepower cars were named Silver Ghost to avoid confusion in 1925. There were a total of 7874 models made from 1906 to 1926. During the World War 1 the production of the 4050 Silver Ghost models was then suspended, however its chassis and engines were used in armoured cars by the Rolls-Royce. As years have passed many other models from competitors have surpassed the function of the 4050 Silver Ghost, therefore having a decline in its production and sales. The production of its successor was then started in 1925, the Phantom 1.

Basic Specifications
The engine is a straight 6 with 7036 cc from 1906 to 1910 and 7428 cc starting 1910. The transmission is a 3-speed manual from 1909 to 1913 and 4-speed manual starting 1913. The wheelbase varied from 135 inches by 1913, 143 inches from 1913 to 1923 up to 144 inches and 150.5 inches starting 1923.

The idea of its first production was to increase public awareness that a car can be quiet and less dangerous on the road. The Rolls-Royce Company took a bold risk in producing the 4050 Silver Ghost because cars were known to be dangerous and were known to be unreliable. Cars were also known to make loud noises. A risk that paid off perfectly well for the company because after they had built this car their reputation of building quality cars was established all over the world.
